The art of writing in signs.

Compose Egyptian hieroglyphic text using Gardiner codes or phonetic values. Scribe is an editor, not an automatic translator.

A1

Pick or type

Use “Type a sound or sign”: enter nfr for F35, w for G43, or aq for G35, then press Enter. You can also click the inscription and type a value followed by Space. Values are case-sensitive; Gardiner codes work too.

:

Build a group

Use : to stack, * to join side by side, and - to separate groups. Try nfr-f:r.

⇧

Select & shape

Drag across signs, or use Shift + arrows or Shift + click, to highlight them. Hover over the highlight to see dictionary transliterations and meanings. You can also choose Read selection. Use Stack, Join, or Cartouche to arrange selected signs. Choose Colour to apply a preset or custom colour to selected groups or your whole inscription.

Start a new line

Type ! or use ↵ in the toolbar. Undo with ⌘/Ctrl + Z. Edit MdC at the top and click Apply.

Type translation or transliteration directly on the paper, and choose Below or Beside. Notes save with your browser draft and profile. Export a Scribe document to keep a complete editable backup, or .gly for hieroglyphs in JSesh.

Export your inscription

Save an editable Scribe document, a finished image, or an A4 document. PDF and Word preserve the canvas as an image; use .scribe to keep all elements editable.

This inserts the printed sign sequence into your current inscription. The dictionary’s original stacked layout is not preserved.

Keep your inscriptions

Create a profile to save inscriptions and open them again on another visit or device. Your library is private to your account.

Save your current work?

Opening a saved inscription replaces the editor’s current draft. Save it first to keep it in your profile.
